If the opponent's elbow is straight, you can go for an elbow lock. If the opponent's elbow is bent, you can go for a shoulder lock. In both cases you should try a simultaneous wrist lock.

Bunkai do kata é analisar as partes para entender o todo! Pegar apenas um pedacinho do kata e colocá-lo fora de contexto, sem entender a lógica do produto completo, não é bunkai. Se fosse, o kata em si não seria necessário.

🇧🇷 A chave de braço mais devastadora que eu conheço é também uma das mais simples, e presente em uma grande quantidade de kata do karate. Com ela, Shinya Aoki venceu Keith Wisniewski no torneio Shooto de MMA. Existem muitas variações dessa chave, como entrando pela frente, girando por trás (como no vídeo), combinando com chave de punho e transformando em chave de ombro, sem falar das inúmeras formas diferentes de pegada. Essa é uma técnica que @samirberardo sempre ensine em meus seminários de karate antigo e que irá ensinar nos próximos seminários este ano - indispensável!

🇬🇧 The most devastating armbar I know of is also one of the simplest, and present in a great number of karate kata. With it, Shinya Aoki defeated Keith Wisniewski in the Shooto MMA tournament. There are many variations to this armbar, such as entering from the front, spinning from the back (like in the video), combining it with a wrist lock and turning it into a shoulder lock, not to mention the countless different gripping methods. 👉 Old style karate stickiness technique in MMA!

Jorge "Gamebred" Masvidal, keeping physical contact with his opponent, used tactile sensitivity to predict, obstruct and deflect attacks received at close range. These are techniques present in old school karate and in the Muidokan curriculum, as can be seen in the video!

In addition to the integral technical reconstruction carried out by Muidokan research, these techniques still remain present to a greater or lesser extent in some lines of Okinawan karate, as in the school of Maeshiro Morinobu (10th dan) of Shidokan Shorin-ryu, as seen at the end of the video, with scenes captured by the our dear and unforgettable friend @FistofShuri.

Jorge "Gamebred" Masvidal, mantendo contato com o oponente, utilizou a sensibilidade tátil para prever, obstruir e defletir os ataques recebidos à curta distância. Trata-se de técnicas presentes no karate antigo e no currículo do Muidokan, como pode ser observado no vídeo!

Além da reconstrução técnica integral feita pela pesquisa do Muidokan, essas técnicas ainda permanecem presentes em maior ou menor grau em algumas linhagens do karate de Okinawa, como na escola de Maeshiro Morinobu (10º dan) do Shidokan Shorin-ryu, como se vê no final do vídeo, com cenas capturadas pelo nosso inesquecível e querido amigo @FistofShuri.

In old style karate, kicks tend to be used in a far different fashion when compared to their applications in modern fighting arts. The self-defense nature of old style karate requires the use of more conservative and less risky (to the karate practitioner) maneuvers, in a way that the karate practitioner still can use their legs to perform extremely effective attacks, but without compromising their balance or wasting time, energy or other tactical advantages. Another fundamental aspect of those kicks, also common to all old style karate techniques, is the economy of movement, that provides application to every part of your motions instead of only the last pa.rt as is often seen today.

The video I posted here shares an example of a real typical old style karate and self-defense oriented kicking maneuver, and it employs the aspects mentioned above. It was shot in the middle of a normal non-collaborative kumite practice with my student Jânio Júnior, and I decided to share it here with a bit of commentary.

While the kick to my student's leg may look to have been particularly dangerous, it actually caused no harm to him, as the maneuver was carefully controlled from my side and skillfully received from his side. However, should never be attempted by not against those without sufficient training, due to the dangers of causing injuries to the receiver's knee, and in any case it must always be performed with extreme caution. Admittedly, karate training is often inevitably a dangerous activity, but if conducted with great care it can be far less dangerous (even less dangerous than other common physical activities such as playing sports). Fortunately to this date no student has ever been injured when training in our school - and we always do our best to keep it that way!
